Q+A WITH RADIANT CHILD DIRECTOR TAMRA DAVIS
As our #AOxBasquiat collection descends upon stores, we sat down with brilliant director and all-around all-star, Tamra Davis. She is the woman behind Radiant Child, the Basquiat documentary centered around an interview she recorded of the late artist and her friend many years before. Few knew Basquiat better. But Davis isn't just a Basquiat aficionado, she is behind many of our favorites from Billy Madison to Grey's Anatomy to Crossroads! Plus, she's a mom with the most to two boys. Tune in to her brilliance as she inspires with her answers below.
YOU IN 5 WORDS:
Live life to the fullest
FROM MUSIC TO FINE ART, YOU’VE FEATURED SOME OF THE GREATS. WHICH ARTISTS HAVE INSPIRED YOU?
I am inspired by so many people and things - literally everyone I have worked with has inspired me. It is the way I like to work and I am so grateful that I have had the opportunity to work with so many amazing, inspirational people. Not just the actors in front of the camera but I can find inspiration in anything if I look deep enough.
YOU LITERALLY RUN THE SHOW! WHAT’S YOUR MOTTO AS A BOSS?
I always come with an idea but I'm open for discussion. It can only strengthen my take or make it better.
AS A DIRECTOR, MOTHER, CHEF, AMAZING FRIEND & SO MUCH MORE, WHAT DOES AN AVERAGE TAMRA DAVIS DAY LOOK LIKE?
I have two average days. I'm either working or I'm not.
If I'm working: Cappuccino, nytimes, gmail, Duolingo, NYT 7 minute workout, lecture on the way to work, direct a Sisyphean 12-hour day, drive home and catch up with my kids and life. Get high and work on the next day. Take a bath and watch a show. Try to get 7 hours of sleep. Repeat.
If I'm not working: I still have a cappuccino, the paper, gmail, Duolingo, NYT 7 minute app, but then I try and be a devoted mom. I make the boys breakfast, take them to school or surf practice, go for a beach run with the dogs, workout with my malibu mom girlfriends, get a wolverine at Sunlife, read, desk stuff, go grocery shopping, pick up kids, watch them surf or skateboard, make them dinner, watch a show with them, and go to bed early. Honestly, I'm so grateful because I couldn't be happier if I was just one of these girls.
BASQUIAT WAS YOUR PERSONAL FRIEND AND, THEN, IN MAKING RADIANT CHILD YOU BECAME A MAJOR AFICIONADO. WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM THE LATE ARTIST?
Sooooo much! I tried to put it all in the film. Mostly, I learned about the fragility of talent and that it's possible to go back in time and once again be inspired by a friend.
I'm always obsessed by the sunrise and sunset, the sky, the ocean, the landscape and my two boys. But I'm currently obsessed with Black Mirror, Helen Fisher, an artisanal cocktail, everything but the house, the great courses, my A&O black blazer, airbird shoes and my new claire vivier purse.
WORDS OF WISDOM TO WOMEN?
Dudes stop reading now. Girls we can do it. Let's take over. Now is the time. They are too busy looking at our exterior and have no idea that we are two steps ahead in our heads and not gloating about it. I know you can do it -- the only one you need to convince is yourself.
