How did you enter the cannabis beauty business? What inspired you?

I started working in the cannabis industry when I was 18, at a medical marijuana dispensary. It wouldn’t be for another 7 years until I would start my first company, The Crystal Cult which specialized in Swarovski Crystal Vape pens. It was because of Crystal Cult, that I found my customers and my community of women who loved cannabis. Over time I realized that cannabis was about wellness for women and thus created Kush Queen's beauty and wellness products. I wanted to create products that harnessed the powers of the cannabis plant and were clean, intelligently designed, and beautiful .

Which is your favorite of your products?

I really can't live without our Melt Relief lotion. It has a cooling effect, like an organic icy hot with CBD. I use it all day every day from sore feet to the back of my neck, I am always rubbing Melt somewhere. I use it for my monthly cramps and when I travel I need it for mosquito bites and/or soreness. It's one of those products that improves my life so much, I can't go without it.

How has using CBD/THC infused products personally helped you?

My relationship with cannabis has evolved over the years as I have. At first, it was a social tool for me to connect with others. Alcohol had a very negative effect on me, so being able to use cannabis in college was huge. But the first thing I really noticed after my introduction to cannabis in college was that it made me sleep. I've struggled with sleep since I was a child and the biggest thing both THC and CBD have brought me is a good night's sleep. In my late 20's medication for depression and anxiety was taking a toll on my health. That's really when CBD became a part of my daily routine. It's when I really learned about the endocannabinoid system and what it was doing inside my body. That's when I started looking at cannabinoids like vitamins. I realized that loading up on CBD around my period could help reduce my symptoms, and taking it every day was the key to creating balance inside my body. I've been off pharmaceuticals now for almost 3 years and I credit it all to cannabinoids, yoga, and therapy.

What are the most common misconceptions about cannabis products?

I think the most common misconception about cannabis products is that they are just trendy. A lot of people I meet think that CBD is just a fad and they write it off as another ingredient having a moment in beauty, but cannabis has historical roots and has been used for thousands of years, for beauty and by women. From Maya Angelou to Queen Victoria, cannabis has been a part of beauty and wellness for a very, very long time.

What is wellness to you?

Wellness to me is something that is ever-changing and hard to define, but it all goes back to 'when you know better you do better'. It's consciously taking care of my body from the inside out, resting, avoiding alcohol, going to therapy, practicing gratitude, and choosing healthier options. It's a bath on Sunday, yoga whenever I can, hiking, social media breaks, and cuddling my dog. Ultimately, wellness for me is about being the best human I can be and waking up everyday feeling my best, so I can help make the world a better place.

Heel or flat…why?

I am heels all the way. I am 5'2 so I feel like heels are just a way of life. The cannabis industry is also painfully casual, so I love to throw on a heel anytime I can.

Tell us more about the collaboration with alice+ Olivia

alice+olivia and Kush Queen have many fundamental things in common, from being female-founded to the sparkling rainbow worlds we inhabit. So, the collaboration is authentically rooted in some serious feminine energy and self-care. We wanted to create versions of our Kush Queen products that we knew people loved or something new that we had never done before. We had to do the bath bomb because Kush Queen is the #1 CBD bath bomb in the world, but we needed to make it extra special. So we did a 200mg CBD dose and custom essential oil blend of vetiver, sandalwood, and lavender. The essential oils and CBD are perfect for putting you to sleep and because CBD is non-psychoactive, you won't feel high, but you will FEEL it. Then, we wanted to create a bubble bath. We had never done a bubble bath before at Kush Queen, but I personally always love pairing a bubble bath with our bath bombs. It is lightly scented with lavender, so it will pair well with the bath bomb. You can also use it alone if you're not looking for such a high dose. Lastly, we had never done a simple body lotion, and we wanted to create something that could be multi-use; you can use it after a bath or quickly on your hands in the middle of the day. The collection is truly a self-care trifecta that will leave you feeling deeply relaxed and rejuvenated.

Do you have a boss motto?

My boss motto is "they can't stop you if you don't stop." Being in cannabis, I have had my fair share of struggles, censorship, and people working against me. You have people working against you at all times from all sides, so I always say 'they can't stop you if you don't stop.' It reminds me to stay in my lane, focus on me, and not let anyone stop my action. Entrepreneurship is inherently about not giving up day after day and this motto reminds me daily that the only failure is quitting.

Do your products have a targeted demographic or are they usable by all?

In the early days of the brand, we were truly female-focused. Over the years, Kush Queen has seen our demographic grow. Our Melt pain lotion and Gummies RX products brought us a demographic of Seniors who fell in love with the products. At events, we often have men coming up and saying "I love your bath bombs." Now, Kush Queen products are truly for everyone and our messaging has shifted. Ultimately, we believe everyone deserves to feel better and want our products to reach as many people as possible.

What is the best advice that someone has given you and who was that person to you?

The best advice I've ever been given was from my mother: " follow your gut and go". When I started Kush Queen, I didn't have the most funding or even the clearest plan. What I did have was my intuition and my gut telling me this was going to work. I feel like women are trained to silence our inner voice so often. I am lucky my mother taught me to listen to that voice and never write it off. It has been invaluable in my life and my business.
