CELEBRATING JUNETEENTH

Because Texas was the last confederate state to announce the proclamation following the Civil War, Juneteenth also represents emancipation for the last remaining enslaved African Americans in the confederacy. On June 19, 1865, Major Gen. Gordon Granger came to Galveston, Texas, to inform the community that President Abraham Lincoln had freed the slaves two years earlier and that Texas had to comply with the federal law. Before that declaration, approximately 250,000 slaves still resided in Texas. Even after that day, slavery did not end overnight. But that day and declaration are seen as a turning point and hence a day of celebration today.
