Mother, author, actress & writer – Jill Kargman is the ultimate boss babe. She has penned over 10 novels, written and starred in her own television series, Odd Mom Out, all while raising three kids in New York City. We talked to Jill about her work, her life and how she does it all—and well.
What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?
Pee like Austin Powers, get dressed, wake up the Karglings, and imitate the NestléQwik™️ bunny slurping, except instead of chocolate milk it’s a growler of Birch Cold Brew with half and half and vanilla syrup.
Last thing you do before you go to bed?
Read Daniel Silva- I’ve read 17 books in the last 8 months, I’m an addict! I’m obsessed and break a sweat devouring these Israeli spy novels.
As a mother of three, author, radio show host and all-around Boss Babe, what advice do you have to women who want to DO IT ALL- like you?
Oh jeez, I never feel like I’m handling everything gracefully at all but I’d say while I worship my kids, sleepaway camp has proven to be incredible marriage defibrillators. They love their summers in the woods and Harry and I get alone time and feel like boyfriend/girlfriend again. My work is super weird and in spurts so it’s more like a series of sprints with brakes, rather than a marathon so there is an ebb and flow to my bouts of work versus mommymode. Another family rule is we only go out two nights and are home five with the kids, which works for us.
In addition to doing it all, you also created and starred in television series Odd Mom Out. How much does your character and the show reflect you and your real life?
I’d say Jill Weber and I have a 90% overlap. Both have three kids and flexible careers but on the show my character is more like me at 28 as a new mom; I was so vulnerable and felt like all my badassery evaporated. I cried for no reason and felt fragile somehow, probably part hormone crash and part sheet exhaustion. Now my kids are old and I sleep plenty and I don’t really give a shit what anyone thinks. So real me is much stronger than TV me.
What is your favorite show to binge watch?
Harry and I are really into Fauda right now. It’s so gripping.
What advice would you give to your 20 year old self?
I’d say keep writing how you talk and don’t stress so much about meeting a NJG (nice Jewish guy). You’ll find him!
What is an app you can’t live without?
Instagram! I love the keyholes into people’s lives and watching my friends‘ kiddies grow.
What is your go-to quick family dinner recipe?
I boil a mean artichoke! My kids love them with drawn butter. I’m a shit cook otherwise but we do simple stuff like fondue, pasta, grilled cheese, and I’m an expert reheater of Fresh Direct dishes. Otherwise, Harry is the chef of the family. The kids are excellent bakers, too. I watch and sip wine.
Who is on your fantasy dinner party guest list?
My family and my five best friends. And that guy Charlie Hunnam from King Arthur. Actually that might not go over too well with Harry. So just my fam and friends.
What does being an AO Boss Babe mean to you?
It’s a huge honor! I’ve always loved alice + olivia and Stacey is a dream example of juggling three kids, work, and marriage all while being kind and fun.
